Congrats to 1up for clearing out the trolls. Thank you. Nov 17, 2011 7:45PM PST

The anti-Nintendo spam was getting out of control.  It didn't bother me because it was aimed at Nintendo, it bothered me because it was mucking up a site I respect.  I expect one of the trolls was a certain notorious member known for his trolling past, evident by his anti-Nintendo blogs leading up to the trolling and then lack of blogging during it.  Whoever the other guy was, well, get a life both of you.  Or go to IGN.  I see plenty of trolling there.  If it was all the work of one person, well, that's just sad.

...after awhile the second dude couldn't even come up with anything new. Just the same post over and over again (read 'em and weep boys!)
It was rather like watching monkeys throw shit at everyone.

having to copy/paste/post troll spam is analogous to waving the white flag of surrender.

I hadn't seen 'trolling' that obnoxious until now. I am just thankful to the guys at 1up for solving it.

Also, for a moment I thought they weren't going to do anything about those users...  perhaps it's better to forget.
    P.S:  Thanks so much 1up.

While I'm at it, I just wanted to say that referring said troll(s) to IGN in the blog isn't a dig at IGN, it's just that comments don't really pop out at you there like they do here at 1up.

Trolls are normally easy to spot. Usually if you go to their page they haven't posted any blogs and you can easily track the history of other replies they left. If all their remarks are "trollin" there's no room for a misunderstanding.
1up created a good system that puts the power in our hands mostly. Aka if someone keeps sassing you relentlessly you can put them on ignore.
However, I prefer giving everyone a good second chance. Sometimes in a heated moment of nerd-rage you may presume someone to be a "troll" when in reality they're a good person simply strongly disagreeing with you. Shit happens,y'know?
Regardless, it's also good to see mods being active. Members would have a hard time regulating everything by themselves.

no second chances for that shit!  it was overtely obvious.  I'm quite suprised it didn't stop with the crap he gave Samuari Terry over a week ago.  Quite frankly, it turned from trolling to spam and like I said in my post below, it's either lack of moderating resources or a need to get hits.
I'm not trying to be negative here about the site, just being honest about my opinion.

I agree @ second chance.  Lord knows I had some "fun" during my Yahoo! chat days.
@echosauce - Although they might not have banned it right away, I'm pretty sure the folks at 1up were aware.  They monitor the site fairly well, IMO, as I've seen them respond to blogs and comments.  There is a certain entertainment quality to trolls, until it becomes excessive and obvious that it won't stop unless measures are taken.

I am all for letting things go a time or two but that stuff got to the point I was ready to leave this site.  Part of me still thinks it was let on long enough to get the web hits and then let it go.  I'm not sure how I feel about it.  I've only been officially a member of this site for a short time but I've been a lurker for years and it surely has gone downhill in some respects.  It's bounced back and I understand in times of transition things can be rough but for that to go on that long was either a lack of resources to moderate or a need to get clicks.  I'll hold final judgement to see what happens in the future.  Sorry for being a dick in my opinions.

But I knew the banhammer was coming.  It happened before, a while ago.  So long ago I don't remember it that well, but it (the troll spam) had a similar tone to it.

Didn't care for the guy, he wasn't directing those insults at me though it did get out of hand when he attacked everyone on pretty much every current Nintendo article. I have never seen so much trolling on an article, most of the comments were from 'that guy'. Seriously just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean you have to attack them. People were trying to be nice and well he just threw it all away. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but do it without verbally harassing anyone.

It would be different if there was even a morsel of intellectual debate within the dozens of obnoxious comments, but sadly there was none.

really change anything, unfortunately.  Trolls are everywhere, might as well just be an ass when you feed them instead of being civil.

But it won't be so widespread and redundant... until the next maniac comes along.  Some people will always have their loyalties and beefs and post them in the comments, but what just happened was borderline pathology.

It really was completely wrong.  I don't really see the point of trolling, and normally don't care, but people can be fairly obnoxious.
  • echosauce
  • It wasn't even trolling

Posted: Nov 18, 2011 12:00AM PST by  echosauce
it was spam at that point.  Trolling is usually more subtle.  Like how it got it's name, you cast a line into the water, drag it along and see what fish bite. What happened here was more of a downright begging for attention and was kinda pathetic.

I was so sick of that, I thought I might take a break until the BS died down. Why do some people have to go out of their way to try and make others feel bad? I hate FPSs, and the fact that they've dominated the market for so much of the last decade irks me to no end, but I still respect others' choices to play them. Plus, there's the fact that most of his statements about SS and its fans were about as wrong as you can be.

Hey guys - my name is J. and I'm new here at the 1up offices, I took care of said accounts.  Feel free to let me know if you're having issues in the future, but also remember that personal attacks against people tend to fuel the fire!  We're all for supporting everyone's opinions (no matter how crazy they are) but make sure we're growing our community here :) Nice to meet you all and I look forward to getting to know everyone.
