  • New Game +

I've been going back and playing quite a few older games like Condemned, The Force Unleashed, Bioshock, etc. after I burned through some new titles like Dead Space 2, Binary Domain, and the Darkness 2. One thing I thought of when I played Binary Domain was "This game would be SO much better if it had New Game +" One of the focuses of the single player is to gain experience and buy upgrades, but when you beat the game and go to "chapter select" you can't continue with your character. Instead, you have to start all over, regardless of the chapter. I was looking forward to replaying the Single Player with my beefed up character and to continue working on my other teammates, but nope...couldn't do it. Then I thought about the same thing for The Force Unleashed and Condemned. Condemned mainly because i'm achievement hunting and if you miss a collectable you have to start a new game over, instead of continuing or being able to use chapter select. Having played through Dead Space 2 and The Darkness 2 recently, New Game + has really grown on me. I think it should be included in most action/adventure titles, or titles that are single player focused.
Also, a side note, i'm going to play through KOTOR again, my favorite game of all time. and EVERY time I play it Post-Mass Effect, I always think "Man, this game would be EVEN better if the main character had a voice like Hawke or Shepard."  : )

  • Tough Question

I wrote a blog that's kinda similar to the question. But just incase that doesn't count I want a game crossover with Mario and Sonic, that's a platformer, that's something I always wanted to see, game-wise. It would be interesting to see Mario in Sonic's world and vice-versa. Plus if they could use eachothers respective power-ups. It would be nice to see that. Or a superman game that doesn't suck cause we all know Superman's worst enemy is video games about him.

  • I can think of many games I would do this for

Make it into a Metroidvania or ad a Metroidvania level/bonus like what Tomb Raider did with Croft Mannor. I see a lot of potential with Halo, God of War, Prince of Persia, Assassin's Creed, Ratchet and Clank, and many others.

It's a tough question to answer but good for a debate. My big thing is I like playing through games as multipe characters to get their uniqie perspectives on what's going on. That's why I liked the Resident Evil series so much. It also works to a game's benefit when there's at least one female protagonist.
I dunno why but games with only one playable hero burn me out faster. Then again I can understand time & money restraints developers have to work around.
Additionally I'd like to see more massively open world rpgs with better writing, greater emphasis placed on relationships, and a plethora of more personal quests. The "go there & fetch or kill that" routine gets so old after awhile!

I would like to see games with less bugs in them like dead island, silent hill hd , silent hill downpour, amy, I wish they were more like Nintendo games that never have issues with them.

Give me a level editor in Super Mario.  Think Little Big Planet but in the world of Mario.  Allow me to download levels made by other players.  Allow me to use all the assets from the 8-bit, 16-bit, 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy games.  Just thinking what people could do with all the different power ups Mario has had through the ages.  The Japanese Super Mario 2 would look like a kids game:)

Great answers!  It kinda feels like a game development brainstorming session.  It'd be nice if we could implement all these ideas into one game.  As always, thanks for participating, and good luck!

That last line breaks numerous grammer rules and is hilarious.  The professional in me wants to correct it, but I'll keep it for posterity.  Sould read, "If you had your way, what would you do?".

How 'bout a Call of Duty-like FPS that's not just about shooting indiscriminantly and blowing shit up? That actually incorporates real-life elements of war into your battles? Like your enemies bleeding and moaning in agony after they've had their limbs blown off, accidental civilian casualties and your buddies suffering from PTSD and opening fire on their own teammates?

think this would go for a lot of games this gen, but I will take Uncharted as an example. I would make the platforming challenging and less automated. Admittedly there are times when its simplistic platforming makes sense like when it is just an element of the combat. But for it's traversal only sections, I would make changes there. For one, make it a puzzle to navigate the environment. So you have to figure out how to get from point A to point B. But the moveset/controls would have to be more complicated as well to achieve this. And maybe add more "traps" that would require timing. Think Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. I love Uncharted's combat and setpieces. And in 3 the puzzles became worthwhile. If the platforming was better it could be even better than it is already.

  • Choices in Mass Effect

    Posted: Jul 11, 2012 12:00AM PST by  Timberwolf8889
    Mass Effect: More short-term choices.

One thing that's really cool about Mass Effect: that they presented the player with a lot of choices that had long term effects on your character's personal journey. Now, one thing about Mass Effect that was a great idea but didn't really play out: presenting the player with a lot of choices that were meant to have long-term effects on your character's journey. I love Mass Effect, but their system of choices could have been so much more interesting if they had just stopped trying to make all the "big" choices cross-sequel. How much effect did saving or abandoning the councol have? How about killing the Rachni Queen? Saving or destroying the collector base?
If they had an infinite amount of time Bioware could have made those decisions have a huge impact on how the next game played out but unfortunately they do not and they resulted in set dressing. The council was replaced, the Rachni Queen became robo, the collector base...well, doesn't really matter.
There's two little tweaks that could have made the choices in Mass Effect more compelling:
    1. Remove the "moral" aspect from the choice system. Choices should come down to cause and effect. Since Bioware chose to cling to the Renegade and Paragon option, this was what was emphasized instead of the actual consequences of a decision. Instead of making decisions to move a slider in one direction or another, the effect of a decision should be content or relations between characters.
For instance, say there's a situation where Shepard is given the choice of saving one of the more beloved members of the crew at the expense of letting a ship full of civilians die. Now, while we aren't attached to the 1's and 0's that constitute that civilian ship, your allies are, and they make it clear if you let that ship crash there will be problems ahead. But you love that character, he's got good stats, so ok, you'll save him. So you save that character, he's indebted to you, however another character or two lose respect for you, perhaps become enemies because of the decision you made. The reason the choice makes is because it has consequences within the game, you immediately get to feel how it plays out, and a "good" decision in regards to your character and the "game" part of Mass Effect (character stats etc) might have "bad" story consequences and visa versa. There should always be a give and take, instead of a "good" and a "bad" outcome.
Which brings me to my next point:
    2. They shouldn't be afraid to lock out content. Admittedly, that last example would be very difficult to write and plan scenarios for, so let's make it simpler. Like saving Wrex...I think MOST people saved Wrex. But say they presented a scenario where there's a whole section of game or a scenario that you can only experience by letting Wrex die.
Mass Effect: Give benefits for bad decisions and focus those decisions on things that happen in the same game.

I tend to like games where I can make the main character look how I wont them to and be able to ajust there attributes. It  makes me feel more connected to the story. So I would say I would like for more games to do this and not give me a cookie cutter main character.

To all game companies leave it open for fans of a series to have private servers open as long as they care/pay for it.
